YAKS
In 2004, we got the wild idea to buy an orphaned
yak calf just 12 hours old. We had no idea what a member of the family
Annieyak would become. She was born during a very cold spell, and
we raised her in the house for some time. Therefore, it was reasonable
that she grew up thinking she was a St. Bernard!
Since then, we acquired two cows, one of which had
a bullcalf in 2005. We are hoping for calves in 2007.
Yaks are very hardy, and require much less hay than
a beef. The meat is very lean and healthy. If you are fortunate enough
to have a docile yak, like our hand-raised one, you can retrieve
the undercoat as a very high quality fiber. They have very playful
personalities and become very attached to you. |
